About the Band

We are a young jazz group based in Kent, England, that plays a variety of the 'Golden Oldies' of jazz music and some self-composed pieces.The Red Herrings play for a variety of occasions, including private functions (Birthday/Christmas parties, etc.), award ceremonies and other such events.

Danny Brookwell

Danny has been playing with the Herrings since just after the Christmas of 2005. He played with us at a school concert and added so much to the Herrings' sound that we asked him whether he would like to play with us regularly. He is now an active member of the Herrings and plays with us at all of our gigs.

Primrose Briggs

The only sane member of the group, Prim is without a doubt the sensible one. She also has the patience of a saint (which is tested regularly by the boys!) Playing the clarinet and soprano saxophone, Prim adds a certain pizzazz to the Herrings.

Edward Watkinson

Ed is a very diverse musician, playing the saxophones, clarinet, piano and bass to varying ability levels. He co-founded the band, and has been a driving force behind a lot of The Red Herrings' work. Ed plays Soprano, Alto and Tenor saxophone for The Red Herrings.

Fred Smith

Fred is a very gifted person with a good ear for jazz and plays electric and double bass for the Herrings. He has given his own unique presence to the band, adding some sophistication to the low frequencies.

Chris Pilgrim

Chris plays the piano/keyboard and has done so for the last 10 years. He is an accomplished classical pianist and this has enabled him, with his technical ability, to add a different dimension to the rhythm section of The Red Herrings. He also sings for the Herrings at most performances.
